St. Matthias High School Department of Student Services Guidance CounselingThe Guidance Counseling program at St. Matthias is designed to follow students all four years of their high school careers. Students will receive individual face to face contact with their counselor for academic support, course scheduling, personal/social needs, and college/career guidance. The National Standards for School Counseling set forth by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) recommends a counseling program that services all students and the whole student. The California School Counselor Association (CSCA) takes a step further in suggesting guidelines for the implementation of a comprehensive program and ways to assess its effectiveness in meeting the needs of the parents and students. St. Matthias has adopted both models. Credentialed counselor will work with your daughters on the following: Individual counseling Career information Group counseling Scholarships & financial aid Analyzing & understanding test scores College visits Study skills SAT Preparation College guidance Academic intervention Course scheduling Mrs. Zozaya Ms Rawat Vice-Principal/Academic Dean College Counselor vzozaya@stmatthiashs.org krawat@stmatthiashs.org Call at (562)-861-2271 Students wishing to speak to Academic Dean will need to fill out a counseling request form located outside her office. Parents are welcomed to call or email their daughter’s counselor with questions, concerns, or just to say hi! Please look for counseling updates on the school website & in the newsletter. Our overall goal is to get to know each and every student, so they can be successful here at St. Matthias and in their academic and personal careers after high school. College Counseling: The college selection process is an exciting (and sometimes anxious) time for juniors and seniors. Our college counselor, therefore, works closely with each student to assist her in identifying college and university choices that are right for her. Students are provided with classroom instruction, workshops, and one-on-one counseling sessions and admission. Each student is taught the skills necessary to handle the college admissions and paperwork process efficiently. The SMHS College Counseling Center is equipped with resources, tools and materials needed for researching and selecting an appropriate school. Personal Counseling: As parents know, the teenage years are filled with a broad range of new emotions and experiences. A personal counselor is available on campus each week to meet with young women confidentially to discuss any aspect of her life. Counseling services provide an opportunity for students to talk with a responsible and competent third party who recognizes the importance of the family structure. |
